01·Heritage
A century-plus institution, half a century at the pressure frontier.
For over a century, Uttam has been a multinational leader in energy and healthcare, serving customers and missions that have no tolerance for failure.
Family legacy from 1900 · Uttam Air Products, 1972
The Bhatia family’s legacy reaches back to 1900. The modern gas-engineering era opened in 1972, with the incorporation of Uttam Air Products, high-pressure containment, cylinders and complete gas systems.
That combination is the whole point: a century-plus of operation behind it, and a half-century of engineering leadership in the specific, unforgiving discipline of high-pressure gas. In 2008, Karan and Aanchal Bhatia incorporated Uttam Cylinders, the group’s flagship manufacturing entity. The group’s COVID-19 oxygen response and the Ashvath refuelling unit pointed the institution squarely at the clean-energy era.

02·The founder

Dr. Panna Lal Bhatia
Founder · Uttam Air Products, 1972
The youngest of four brothers, Dr. Panna Lal Bhatia built the foundation that Uttam still stands on.
He founded Uttam Air Products in 1972, soon after returning from Germany with a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the Technische Universität Dresden. It was the move that turned a century-old trading house into a gas-engineering institution.
The groundwork came earlier: in 1965 the family formed Roop Chand Uttam Chand Industries to manufacture oil-hydraulic systems, the group’s first step into precision engineering, before diversifying into industrial and medical gases.
In 1975 he founded the All India Industrial Gases Manufacturers Association (AIIGMA), the industry’s national body for gases, cylinders, equipment and safety, the same association Karan Bhatia would later be twice elected to lead. Today AIIGMA counts 310 members, representing companies and organisations from every state in India. A philanthropist and industry statesman, his leadership shaped not only Uttam but the Indian gas industry as a whole.
